Denzel Whitaker: Abduction, Warrior, and… Indie Rock?

by on

Actor Denzel Whitaker might be most recognized for his role in The Great Debaters but that is all about to change. Appearing in theaters September 23rd, Denzel can be seen in the much anticipated movie Abduction alongside Taylor Lautner. Whitaker plays “Gilly,” Nathan’s (Lautner’s) best friend. This action packed drama, centered around Lautner’s character who takes on a dangerous journey in search of his birthparents, proves to be a welcomed challenge for Whitaker. His talents and acting chops are thoroughly put to work in this film as he portrays a high school senior who loves to party, drink, smoke weed and make fake I.D.’s, but who also proves to be an essential friend to Nathan in his time of need.

Whitaker has also played smaller roles in various other shows such as ER, Brothers & Sisters, and CSI (admittedly his most challenging role). Citing Will Smith and George Clooney as inspirations, he proves that he has lofty goals and hopes to one day get behind the scenes and direct. However, he is not a complete novice at directing. Along with Ryan Perez, he co-directed an indie rock music video ”Low Wound” for the band Bikelock. A lover of all things rock, I found the video surprisingly good. I say surprisingly because rock is not Denzel’s typical music genre. Laughing, he admits to me that he has not always been interested in this kind of music, but, having the opportunity to direct, he took on the challenge. It certainly paid off. The video is remarkably played out and entertaining. If you are a fan of music, any genre, I would definitely recommend checking it out.
