Dio Brando is a truly evil character in just about every way. After the death of his father he schemes and manipulates his way to wealth and power. When he finally obtains power through something known as the Stone Mask, Brando becomes a vampire hellbent on world domination. What makes his character so compelling is the innate nature of his wickedness. He was born evil and he doesn’t have it in him to be anything else. There’s something very appealing about a villain who’s inherently bad no matter what. While not necessarily an especially dark anime, characters like these certainly make it that much more grim.
The protagonist of Battle Tendency is one of the most important of all the Joestars. He introduces Stands to the series and he brings about much of what we now think of when we think Jojo. Prior to Joseph the series was difficult to separate from its peers like Dragon Ball Z. It had action and it had excitement, but there was hardly anything you could call distinct or noteworthy about the adventures of Johnathan Joestar. In this series we finally get to see someone from the Joestar clan in a globetrotting adventure with all of the trappings that the series is now known for, ever since it’s 80s anime comic beginnings.
The son of Dio Brando stands out as one of the most interesting characters. He wants to join one of the most notorious gangs in Japan with the intention of restoring the honor the Japanese mafia once had. A departure from traditional anime tropes Giorno is refreshing and creative.
