When Justin Nelson, a 1998 graduate of Tufts University, first sought a foothold in the finance
industry, his journey was far from easy. Despite the lack of on-campus
recruitment by financial firms, Nelson managed to secure an internship at JP Morgan Private Bank, thanks to his network of friends in the industry.
This pivotal opportunity led to a full-time position post-graduation and
eventually, a distinguished career within JP Morgan’s private banking and asset management divisions.
Nelson’s rise to the position of managing director at JP Morgan was marked by a commitment to opening
doors for future Tufts graduates. In 2006, he initiated efforts to establish
Tufts as one of JP Morgan’s core schools for recruiting. This designation means
that the firm actively seeks talent from these institutions, providing students
with invaluable opportunities for internships and entry-level positions.
Initially, Nelson’s efforts were a solo endeavor. Justin Nelson traveled to Tufts, collected résumés, and met with
students, all without the financial backing typically provided to
representatives from core schools. Despite these hurdles, Nelson’s dedication
paid off. By 2009, Tufts graduates were not only being recruited but also
excelling in their roles within JP Morgan. Since his initiative began, 20 Tufts
alumni have interned or been hired full-time by the firm.
One notable success story is Jon Trott, a 2010 graduate who secured a summer internship at JP
Morgan during the challenging post-financial crisis period. With Nelson’s
assistance, Trott transitioned into a full-time position after completing his degree in economics.
Today, Justin Nelson’s legacy at JP Morgan is sustained by a robust network of Tufts
alumni who actively participate in recruiting efforts, ensuring that more
students can follow in their footsteps. Nelson’s contributions have
strengthened the bond between Tufts University and the financial industry,
creating a pipeline for future leaders.
