Clients of wealth management firms increasingly want to know how their financial data is used, stored, and protected, with cybersecurity becoming a genuine value proposition rather than a back-office function. Michael Gold, founder and CEO of Westport’s Gold Family Wealth, says that expectation is only one part of a much larger transparency problem.
Data Rules Are Necessary but Incomplete
New regulations now require clearer fee structures and disclosure around AI-driven investment recommendations, on top of existing data protection standards. Gold does not dispute the value of those rules. He argues, however, that they address symptoms of a deeper issue rather than its root cause.
“Access to capital is no longer limited. Access to good judgment is,” Michael Gold Westport says, describing the coordination problem he believes sits underneath every disclosure requirement regulators have introduced.
Coordination as the Missing Layer of Transparency
Even when a firm’s data practices are fully disclosed, Gold says, a family may still have no visibility into whether its estate attorney, CPA, and investment advisor are working from the same playbook. That fragmentation, more than any data policy, is what he considers the industry’s most underrated blind spot for families.
His Westport-based firm built its practice around orchestrating existing advisors into one coordinated strategy rather than adding new specialists to a family’s roster. The approach draws on frameworks originally developed for complex, multigenerational families, including advanced modeling and governance planning, applied across the firm rather than confined to one team.
Michael Gold was named a Forbes Best-in-State Wealth Advisor in 2025. He says families today are not just asking whether their data is secure. They are asking whether every professional around them understands the full picture and is working toward the same outcome, a form of transparency no disclosure document can fully capture on its own.
That question, Gold says, matters more than any single cybersecurity certification a firm can display. Families in Westport and beyond are learning to ask about coordination the same way they once asked only about encryption standards and data policies.
