Thomas H. Fleeger launched the Dallas-based oil and gas company in 1970, and his son later inherited both an industry and a set of expectations.
Matthew Fleeger’s path to the top of Gulf Coast Western was not a straight line. He attended Southern Methodist University starting in 1970, the same year his father entered the energy business, and graduated in 1985 with a degree in finance and marketing. After working for his father’s company and other Texas businesses, he set out on his own.
Building MedSolutions Before Returning Home
In 1993, Fleeger started MedSolutions Inc., a medical waste treatment and disposal company that grew quickly across the healthcare industry. He eventually sold the business to Stericycle in 2007 for roughly $59 million, a deal that demonstrated his ability to build and exit a company successfully.
Two years later, Fleeger stepped into the role of President and CEO of Gulf Coast Western. He brought with him experience in negotiating contracts, structuring partnerships, and building teams, skills that translated directly into managing an energy company built around joint ventures and acquisitions. Leading With Transparency
Since taking the reins, Fleeger has emphasized open communication with the investors who fund Gulf Coast Western’s projects. He has said that a positive attitude in difficult moments matters as much as technical skill, describing it as a mindset every successful leader needs.
That philosophy extends to how Gulf Coast Western handles setbacks. When problems come up, the company provides investors with a clear plan for resolution rather than leaving them in the dark. Fleeger also devotes time to philanthropy, supporting causes tied to pediatric cancer research and STEM education in the Dallas area. Under his direction, Gulf Coast Western has continued to grow, closing merger agreements and expanding its reach across multiple states.
